Steven Gerrard is set to play his 600th game for Liverpool on Sunday and to help celebrate the occasion we have republished a year-by-year picture special of our skipper's outstanding career which was first used to mark his birthday in May.

In 2006, Brazilian icon Pele labelled Gerrard "absolutely world class," and declared: "If I was a manager, everywhere I went, I would buy him."

Zinedine Zidane hailed the Huyton-born midfielder as the world's best in 2009, adding: "He gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that - players like him are just born with that presence."

But Thierry Henry best encapsulated Gerrard's Anfield legacy when he remarked: "For me, and I have always said this, Stevie will be regarded as one of the greatest midfielders ever when he finishes his career. No doubt.

"The guy is always putting his foot in, always scoring and doing what he has to do to make his team win. He, for me, is Liverpool."

1998: Gerrard made his Liverpool debut against Blackburn.

1999: He scored his first senior goal in a win over Sheffield Wednesday.

2000: He made his England debut against Ukraine a day after turning 20.

2001: Gerrard scored 10 goals in the year Liverpool won a famous treble.

2002: He settles into the first team as the Reds finish 2nd in the league.

2003: In October 2003 he replaces Sami Hyypia as Liverpool captain.

2004: Gerrard was a regular at Euro 2004 netting against Switzerland.

2005: He inspired the greatest European Cup comeback of all time.

2006: He scored one of the most brilliant goals ever seen in an FA Cup final.

2007: Gerrard shone as the Reds went to another Champions League final.

2008: Scored famous goals at Anfield against Inter and Arsenal in Europe.

2009: Madrid were thrashed at Anfield as the Reds came 2nd in the league.

2010: Scores at Old Trafford and re-creates his camera-kiss celebration.

2011: A kiss of the badge followed yet another strike against United.

Approaching 600 games for the club...he continues to lead by example.
