45 great LFC v Wigan stats
Head to head: (league only)
We've got 45 great stats from LFC's club statto Ged Rea ahead of our trip to Wigan.
Overall: Liverpool 7 wins, Wigan 1 win, 4 draws.

At Wigan: Liverpool 3 wins, Wigan 1 win, 2 draws.

Last season at Wigan the sides drew 1-1. Fernando Torres scored after seven minutes with Hugo Rodallega equalising seven minutes into the second half.

In the return the sides once again played out a 1-1 draw. Again Wigan equalised, this time through Steve Gohouri after Raul Meireles had opened the scoring with his fifth goal in six games.

It was the first time both games in a season between the sides had ended in a draw.

Liverpool's biggest league win over Wigan came on this ground in December 2006 when they won 4-0 with all the goals coming in the first half. Craig Bellamy (2) and Dirk Kuyt were amongst the scorers that day.

Their last victory on the ground came in September 2007 when substitute Yossi Benayoun scored the only goal when the stadium was named the JJB.

Kuyt has scored more goals for Liverpool against Wigan than any other player. He has five.

Only one player had scored a hat-trick for Liverpool against Wigan. Steve Staunton in a League Cup tie in 1989 became the first substitute in Liverpool's history to score three goals in a game, a feat only equalled by Steven Gerrard last season.

The Reds have not kept a clean sheet in any of the last seven league meetings.

Last season was the first time Liverpool had failed to win the first league meeting of the season.

Andy Carroll made his career league debut on this ground in February 2007 - for Newcastle in a 1-0 defeat.

Liverpool have won nine of the 17 away league games played under Kenny Dalglish in 2011.

They are looking for a third league win in succession for the first time since May.

The Reds have lost only one of their last 14 games in all competitions.

Tottenham were the last team to score more than once against the Reds three months ago. Since then they have conceded eight goals in 14 games with only three coming in the last eight games.

Liverpool have the meanest defence in the Premiership this season having conceded 13 goals in 16 games.

If they shut Wigan out it will be the first time since February that Liverpool have kept three successive clean sheets.

Only Manchester United (six) have won more away from home than Liverpool (and Manchester City and Tottenham) who have won five.

Craig Bellamy has scored eight of his 12 Liverpool goals away from Anfield.

The Latics' only win over Liverpool in the 12 league meetings came in March 2010 when Hugo Rodallega scored the only goal at Wigan.

Hugo Rodallega made his Wigan debut as a substitute in this fixture in January 2009.

He, along with Amr Zaki, is Wigan's leading scorer against Liverpool in the league with two goals.

In the six fixtures at Wigan the home side have scored only three times against Liverpool - Mido in 2008-09 and Rodallega in each of the last two seasons.

The Latics have picked up seven points out of 36 in the league against the Reds.

They have scored only eight times in the 12 league meetings between the teams, but have found the net in each of the last seven clashes.

They have only conceded twice to Liverpool in the last three meetings and are unbeaten in that time.

Wigan have lost only one of the last five games against the Reds.

Wigan have won only nine of the last 39 home Premier League games and none in the last six.

Their only win in front of their home fans came in August when they beat QPR 2-0. Since then they have drawn two and lost four. The defeats came at the hands of Tottenham (1-2), Bolton (1-3), Fulham (0-2) and Arsenal (0-4).

They have drawn with Norwich (on the opening day), Blackburn and last Saturday 1-1 with Chelsea.

Wigan have won two of their last four games - both away from home - Sunderland and West Brom 2-1. In each game they came from behind to win.

However they have beaten in four of the last six at home.

Along with QPR, Wigan are the lowest scorers in the Barclays Premier League this season with 15.

They have been awarded five penalties in the league this season - more than any other top-flight team.

Roberto Martinez has won 21 of his 92 league games in charge of the Latics.

Ben Watson has missed two penalties this season, though he did score a rebound in the 3-1 defeat at Wolves last month.

Hugo Rodallega was the joint scorer last season with nine league goals. He has yet to get off the mark in this campaign, though he has started just six times.

Jordi Gomez has scored all of his four goals this season in the last five games.

Ali Al Habsi and Victor Moses are the only players to have started all league games though Maynor Figueroa has appeared in them all (one substitute appearance).

Last Saturday's draw with Chelsea was their 400th since they joined the Football League in 1978.

Wigan will be hoping to avoid the relegation fight they were involved in last season. Their 1-0 win at Stoke (thanks to a Rodallega goal) saw them climb to safety from 19th place. They won 3 and drew 2 of their last 6 games to preserve their Premiership status.

Tonight's referee Michael Oliver has taken charge of Liverpool 3 times in total. His only Premiership game saw the Reds lose 2-1 at Blackpool in Kenny's first league game back in charge. His last Liverpool fixture was the League Cup win at Brighton in September.

Scorers this season: (league in brackets)

Liverpool: Suarez 8 (5), Bellamy 3 (2), Carroll 3 (2), Maxi 3 (1), Adam 2 (2), Skrtel 2 (2), Gerrard 1 (1), Henderson 1 (1), Johnson 1 (1), Kelly 1 (0), Kuyt 1 (0), own goals 3 (3).

Wigan: Di Santo 4 (4), Gomez 4 (4), Watson 3 (2), Diame 2 (2), Caldwell 1 (1), Crusat 1 (1), Moses 1 (1)

Hesitant

Reds held to Latics stalemate

Liverpool had to settle for a point after being held to a goalless draw by Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Wednesday night.

After an open first half, in which both sides had their goalkeepers to thank for keeping the score level, the Reds were awarded a penalty five minutes into the second period after Gary Caldwell handled an effort from Luis Suarez.

However, Charlie Adam's low effort from 12 yards was saved by Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

Liverpool continued to press in search of a winner, but they were ultimately to be left frustrated by an inspired display from Wigan's custodian.

Having watched his side win so comfortably at Aston Villa on Sunday, Kenny Dalglish opted to make just two changes to his starting line up for the short journey to Wigan - Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt replacing Craig Bellamy and Jonjo Shelvey.

Liverpool have been highly impressive on the road so far this term, and that victory at Villa Park was their fifth in eight contests away from Anfield in the Barclays Premier League. With that in mind, Dalglish would have no doubt have called on his players to pick up where they left off.

A spirited display helped Wigan hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium last time out , but the Reds quickly set about taking the game to their hosts.

Adam smashed an early free-kick into a Wigan wall before good build-up play presented Jordan Henderson with the chance to test Al Habsi from just inside the area.

Then, Martin Skrtel showed nimble footwork to create a shooting opportunity, but the Latics' stopper was able to block the left-foot drive.

Wigan's first opportunity came after 12 minutes when a goalmouth melee resulted in Jordi Gomez's close-range hit being blocked by Pepe Reina - though play had already been halted by referee Michael Oliver, who was to wave away penalty appeals from Victor Moses soon after.

Back came Liverpool and Maxi's first-time volley from Suarez's intelligent centre cleared the crossbar prior to Mohamed Diame striking the side netting with a swerving blast from distance.

Then, on 25 minutes, a one-two between Maxi and Downing resulted in the latter delivering a cross from the touchline which was hooked goalwards by Kuyt, only for Al Habsi to produce a fine block.

Wigan again had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the contest seconds later when he pulled off a sprawling save to thwart Glen Johnson inside the six-yard box from Maxi's cross.

In what was proving to be an end-to-end affair, Reina was required to display his quick reflexes to keep out another Diame attempt.

Moses then had the home fans on their feet after a surging run from half-way allowed the No.11 the chance to shoot, but his blast was met by the fists of Reina who punched the ball to safety.

Wigan certainly finished the opening 45 minutes strongly, and only a last-ditch tackle from Glen Johnson prevented Conor Sammon from getting a clear shot on Reina's goal to ensure the teams went into the break on level terms.

Liverpool almost made the dream start to the second half, but were twice left frustrated by the acrobatics of Al Habsi.

First, the Wigan custodian tipped a Suarez free-kick over the bar before he went one better moments later when Caldwell handled the Uruguayn's overhead kick, presenting the Reds with a penalty.

Adam assumed responsibility, but his kick was repelled by a save at full stretch from Al Habsi.

The Latics' No.26 was enjoying an inspired evening between the sticks, though he wasn't required to intervene when Skrtel headed over Liverpool's next attempt from an Enrique centre.

Next, a well-worked free-kick routine saw Adam clip a ball into the area to pick out the run of Kuyt, but the Dutchman could only loop his attempt off target.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, Dalglish introduced Bellamy and Shelvey into the fray to replace Maxi and Kuyt in an attempt to inject fresh impetus into his side.

But Wigan remained resolute in defence and spurned a good chance of their own to clinch all three points when substitute Hugo Rodallega headed against Johnson when well placed to score meanwhile the teams had to share the spoils.
