Liverpool have welcomed new owners to Anfield but until they find the Fernando Torres of old, England's most successful club are likely to continue to struggle on the pitch.
The Spain striker has scored once in 10 appearances this season, a statistic that goes some way to explaining why Liverpool are second from bottom of the Premier League after losing 2-0 at Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday.
Torres is by no means the team's only problem, but Liverpool are sorely missing his assured finishing and ability to create goals out of nothing.
He scored 22 times for the team last season but, after suffering injury problems returned only in time to play a bit-part in Spain's World Cup triumph.
"He got battered in the World Cup for his performances for Spain and I think mentally he's a little bit low and he needs a goal or two to get his confidence back," Hodgson told Sky Sports.
"Certainly I had no qualms about his performance (against Everton). The chance at the end, if that had gone in, maybe that's the catalyst he needs to take him over the edge and get him playing at his very best.
"Fernando is going through a bad time, his confidence is low, he needs a goal, so if you are talking about him, I would have to agree."
It contrasts sharply with previous seasons. In 2008-09, Liverpool finished second to Manchester United and Torres scored 14 times in the league.
Liverpool's new owners, John W Henry and Tom Werner of New England Sports Ventures, were at Goodison Park for the derby defeat and it might not be long before Hodgson is asking them to release funds for players.
"The January transfer window is still two and a half months away and there is a lot of football to be played before then," Hodgson told reporters.
"We have the squad of players we have and, hopefully, they will work and win some games."

philltubman i think it is time for a big change and the big egos to pull there heads in and sox up and get stuck in, ok torres is short of form but it dont help when he has to feed on scraps cause our midfield cant put 2 passes together and we have no atack minded wingers just negative players, time to give some of the youth a chance, personally i would recall ayala and play him and kelly, wilson or agger
..............................reina......................................
..........kelly.......ayala............agger/wilson........
johnson................................................aurellio/or new lb
...............shelvey...............meireles......................

suehaime I agree with you Charles, what is happening right now, regarding with the style of play is actually damaging the confidence of all the other players, players who we know were playing fantastic football in the last few seasons! Why the sudden change. Obviously we're playing a worse brand of football when compared to last season! Last season at least we were scoring goals and not letting that many in! But this season so far is the other way around! Again, why the sudden change?

Charles Let's not only pick out one individual player (Nando) at this slump rate in the Liverpool form. The team manager and almost his entire squad (save for Pepe) are questionable. Let the new club owners reign on this, after all the player transfer window is at hand. The team is in dire need of another natural striker to partner Nando, but if we still keep many mediocre players the likes of Lucas, then Liverpool is a laughing stalk and relegation material all the way.

suehaime What Roy is doing is actually damaging Torres' confidence. Roy's gameplan of playing just one lone striker is making the opposing team's defence having an easier time. The worst part of the gameplan is that we do not have the talented wingers to attack from the flanks thus opening up the centre for Torres to move about freely! We need a good back up striker and also a good midfielder in the mold of Alonso to make the defence splitting passes! Hope we get them soon! After the derby game I'm beginning to miss Rafa Benitez!

johnwilso86 Your to Negative Roy, we need another striker, some of the players out there are just not good enough or lack the conviction.Lucas summed it up for me when he took on a shot that went wide of the mark, instead of burying his head in his hands, he turns with a rye smile on his face as though it was a training session.Stop being matter of factually, they wanted to win more than we did and that summed it up.Take the blinkers off start taking some of the players to task if they show no interest then get shut!!
