Two Liverpool fans have been stabbed and several others attacked as violence flared across the city of Naples ahead of tonight's Europa League game with Napoli

Merseyside police said that a total of six fans were assaulted in clashes ahead of the match in Naples, with two men aged 27 and 52 taken to hospital with non-life-threatening stab wounds.

Four members of a British family were also attacked, according to another report, with three local men having been arrested in connection with the incident.

"We are still gathering information with regards to yesterday's incidents," a Naples police spokesperson said.

"Four people of the same family, a father, a mother and their two sons, were attacked last night and needed medical attention.

"Due to the aggression, three Naples citizens were arrested."

Media reports added that another Liverpool fan was in hospital in a non-serious condition following an incident where a gang of youths armed with knives and bats approached the English supporters.

English tourists mistaken for Liverpool fans were also accosted by locals at a restaurant with reports saying stones were thrown.

A spokesman for the British consulate in Naples said: "We have had reports of various incidents across the city and three people have been stabbed.

"Two Liverpool supporters suffered knife wounds and will be kept in hospital for a few days and probably miss the match.

"Another supporter was also stabbed but he discharged himself because he wanted to go to the match.

"Three other fans suffered minor injuries after being assaulted and we are working with police to keep an eye on things."

Italian police will be on high alert at Napoli's San Paolo stadium later. Youths damaged the goals and the pitch when breaking into the ground over the weekend.

suehaime Please don't misunderstand me. I'll be the last person to make sweeping statements about anything! There is good and bad in any society but the bad thing about this is that through the actions the very few the others will also be tainted. I too have good Italian friends. But it is the actions of such football hooligans who remains unchecked and beyond the control of the Italian authorities and FA that is doing the damage to their image! Yet again, as John mentioned, through the act of irresponsible reporting more fuel was poured into the fire. By drumming the dark histories of the past the newspapers responsible were fueling the hooligans to justify their acts! Such actions need to be stopped!

johnwilso86 Yes but it doesnt help when one of their local papers writes an article calling us football hooligans and bringing Heysel up again and adding to the problem on the day of the match.... Fifa said because the attacks were outside the stadia it is out of their juristiction that doesnt make it right or is there one rule for them and one for everybody else.

MerseyParadise well I have many italian friends and have been to Italy myself many times.. I wouldn't judge a whole population as I go against foreigners who label all brits as hooligans for the Heysel night.. but as I said I know very well how this sort of shit happens in Rome and Naples, always been and always will. however, for example, when we had to visit Turin in 2005 they were threatening us to go down for revenge but in the end nothing happened.. Italy is very different from areas to areas, bad luck we got one of the worst in the draw but my total respect and support to all who went to Naples to stay close to the team.

suehaime What do you expect from Italians! They were conquerors of much of Europe and the areas around the Mediterranean. I suppose the warring mentality is in the genes! Besides that they are also among the most racist fans in the world!

dibby Its about time the italians were thrown out of football. Whenever they are involved there is violence and abandonned games. Funny how FIFA never see it as their fault though. Perhaps they should be given extra points by way of compensation for being picked on by all the other civilised footballing nations
