Liverpool sold to owners of Boston Red Sox

Liverpool board announces sale of club to New England Sports Ventures, ending months of boardroom wrangling

Liverpool Football Club has been sold to the US owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, the club announced this morning, following an extraordinary boardroom wrangle that revealed the splits at the highest level of the club.

In a statement on its website, Liverpool said its board had agreed the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV).

Last night the American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, were believed to have rejected the NESV bid, despite the three other directors at Liverpool being prepared to accept it.

This led to an official statement from Liverpool accusing Hicks and Gillet ofopposing the offer because the bid would not give them enough profit for their shares.

However, this morning the club announced that the sale had gone through.

"I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process which has been thorough and extensive," said Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton.

"The board decided to accept NESV's proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox."

NESV, fronted by the multi-millionaire John W Henry, owns a portfolio of companies including the Boston Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Rousch Fenway Racing.

"We've met them in Boston, London and Liverpool over several weeks and I am immensely impressed with what they have achieved and with their vision for Liverpool Football Club," Broughton added.

"By removing the burden of acquisition debt, this offer allows us to focus on investment in the team. I am only disappointed that the owners have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale."

The sale is conditional on Premier League approval, resolution of the dispute concerning Board membership and other matters.

philltubman

philltubman well as im aware there has been no statement of them (nesv)investing in a new stadium but they are looking into trying to upgrade anfield and make it larger by the surrounding area, this guy likes to succed in all his sports empires so even though hes a yank im i no nationality shouldnt come in to it but we are all sceptical but im just glad the two dirty twats are on there way out even with all there claims that they will fight for it through the courts to stop the sale, unfortunately for them they have no chance as by the time it will take them to get it to a court the bank would of stepped up and removed them for defaulting on the loan agreement they signed. my only hope for our club is that the new owners will clear he debt and invest some not loads but some into transfers and a new manager with a bit of spirit and a respected coach across the globe so we can get to playin how we no we can

RONSON If Henry can show the same respect for history in handling the stadium issue, and more importantly find a way to end the club's long title drought, Americans will suddenly become very welcome at Anfield once again.

RONSON "It is not about who you are or where you come from, it is about being the right owner for the club,"John Henry's got a lot of respect in the sports world over in the States. Our problem is, will they understand anything about the way it actually works here and the kind of culture on which this stuff grows?

We deserve to know what is going on. We have fought long and hard to get rid of Hicks and Gillett and we don't want more of the same.

"So we wait with baited breath. We hope these people are the right owners to take over Liverpool Football Club."

johnwilso86

johnwilso86 Lfc tv and Lfc web site are releasing statements about the goings on with the sale of the club, these are the only two media repesentitives I would be listening to for a more clear picture on what is happening with the sale. Also although I am happy if it is factual that we are finally getting rid of those two Pariah,s I am also a bit sceptical about the potential buyers, lets hope it is not a case of (jumping from the frying pan and into the fire) we the supporters need to be kept in the picture on every aspect of the club sale AND ALL IT ENTAILS.
