Gerrard: Liverpool must sign four 'quality' players to return to the top

BackSteven Gerrard has told Liverpool to sign four 'quality' players as they attempt to reignite a title challenge next season. The Reds are likely to miss out on the Champions League despite Monday's 3-0 victory over West Ham at Anfield.
Rafa Benitez's future hangs in the balance as co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett attempt to sell the club. But Gerrard insists they must fork out to bring several big names to Merseyside to revitalise the team.
The Liverpool skipper said: 'There are teams that have grown significantly in recent times, like Chelsea. In addition, Manchester United have been too strong [for us] for many years. Last year we came close to beating them but it is very difficult to overcome such a powerful team.
'Everyone knows that we must learn from this season. Some players have said we need a stronger squad and the key is to have better players and improve. I do not believe in profound changes or a revolution. Three or four quality players should be enough but more quality than quantity.
'The Premier League is the food of this club. We haven't won it for such a long time and the crowd demand it. They want us to win this more than any other competition. We must continue to fight for this, hopefully finishing fourth this season and having a real go next season.
'After finishing second last year we started this season with the idea of winning the league and the Champions League. After a series of bad results we had to change targets. Now the fans are desperate for us to win the Europa League. It's the only trophy left for us to fight for and we want to win it.'
Who Liverpool buy is down to whether Benitez stays at Anfield. The Spanish boss is a summer target for Juventus and Real Madrid. But if they fail to finish in the top four, the priority will be to hold on to Gerrard and star striker Fernando Torres.

dibby Yes we need more players but it confuses me when you say we need another 4 quality players to compete. the Salford redsn havent got four quality players in their squad. what we need is a quality ref and a quality timekeeper

johnwilso86 What Stevie G said, and what the papers print can be construed any way they want just by adding or leaving out words that have been said. "But in the cold light of day" we do need two or three good players and we need to get rid of some of the dead wood. Food for thought, the start of next season could be interesting the prem have got a lot of Internationals in its teams lets see who comes back from the World cup Knackered or injured, and what effect it will have on some teams the first couple of months could be very Interesting.

BKiddo I thought exactly the same, liverforliver, when I read it. I first thought it has been the journalist who wanted Gerrard to get in trouble but then...

suehaime I suppose Gerrard is stating what is a known fact among the Liverpool players and fans alike! It is only the owners who don't seem to understand that in order to maintain a high standard and so that we don't stagnate we do need four or five quality players. But I do believe that we do have quality players who need to be given a chance to prove themselves in our own backyard, that is in the academy! YNWA!

liveforliver Surely it can't be good for morale if the club captain is openly stating that the current squad isn't good enough and that new signings are needed. I agree with Gerrard but perhaps he should looking to boost of the confidence of the players around him for the last few games rather than already looking to next season.
